Little Brother free essay sample
Analytical Essay- Little Brother Power Corrupts Decisions taken by entities of higher power, only cause panic and uneasiness between the people affected. In Cory Doctorows novel, Little Brother, the government does not approve of those who decide to defy control and think for themselves. The actions taken by the DHS after the Bay Bridge bombing create feelings of terror amongst the citizens of San Francisco. Over the course of the story, the DHS takes precautionary measures that contribute to the mental trauma of the citizens. To begin with, Marcus is feeling nsafe in the place he considered his safe-spot, this develops a serious case of paranoia and, causing doubt in his mind. When Marcus is released from capture he thinks to himself, There wasnt a camera in my room-not one I could detect, anyway. There might have been audio bugs, of course. Or better cameras. Or nothing at all. We will write a custom essay sample on Little Brother or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Can you blame me for feeling paranoid? (Doctorow 85). The DHS brought on a new sense of paranoia Marcus has never felt, and this is affecting his mental state, and he no longer feels safe comfortable in the place he always called hisconsidered safe- spot. Furthermore, the dignities of those who are respected get stripped away shamefully and publicly. Furthermore, the dignities of the citizens get stripped away shamefully and publicly. Marcus watches online as, The DHS hog-tied the general, strapping him at the ankles and wrists. Passing pedestrians looked at this guy in his uniform getting tied up, and you could see from his face that this was the worst part, this was the ritual humiliation, the removal of dignity. (226). It is ironic and unsettling for citizens to watch a man in charge of keeping peace attacked and have is dignity removed, by the organization that is supposed to keep people them safe. Finally, the government destroys weakens the self-confidencemental state inof all those who have been captured. Once Barbara gets the guards to open the cell they see Darryl, He had shredded his paper hospital gown. He was curled up, naked, in the back of the cell, shielding himself from the camera and our stares, I ran to him. He trembled and squeezed his eyes shut. (352). After being abused for many weeks, Darryl is broken inside as well as on the outside, he will forever remember all the hardships that he went through. Rather than the precautionary decisions helping the mental state of the citizens, they the DHS disturb the peace of the people. Along with mental trauma, the DHS is also the cause of physical trauma inflicted upon the citizens. First, the DHS are is causing terror and physical pain amo ngst their own people by using harmful chemicals in order to prove their point. At the concert in Dolores Park, the DHS decides to show up, Pepper spray. Not a hundred thousand Scovilles. A million and a half. Theyd gassed the crowd. I didnt see what happened next, but I heard it. First the choking retching sounds. Then coughing. Then screaming. The screaming went on for a long time. (195-196). Rather than handling chemicals that cause panic as well as pain on the crowd of all ages. Next, people in respected positions that stand up for their rights are getting physically injured and abused by those who want to keep the country safe. Marcus watched helplessly as, The DHS guy ran after the general. three of the giant DHS guards slammed into him, knocking him sideways, then catching him at the middle, like a career-ending football tackle. The general. went down like a sack of potatoes and bounced twice, is face slamming off the sidewalk and blood starting out of his nose. (225-226). Despite the fact that the general is in a respected position, his own people dishonourdishonor him, this video and his scars will haunt him for the rest of his life. Last, the DHS does not care about the peoplespeoples health, they will do anything to get what they want, including different types of physical torture. Marcus is held in captivity and tortured by the DHS again, Her voice reeled me in. You get struck down like this, and we pour water over your head, up your nose and down your mouth. You cant suppress the gag reflex. They call it a simulated execution, and from I can tell from this side of the room, thats a fair assessment. You wont be able to fght the feeling that youre dying. . That was it, real torture. (344). The cruel treatment that Marcus has been given without authorization, displays that the DHS does not care about breaking laws and have gotten out of control by putting actions such as attempt of murder under the name of safety. The way the DHS handles situations with physical torture, creates panic as well as trauma. The treatment given from the DHS to the citizens of San Francisco have all been xperiences where entities whothat work under the name of safety have created terror and havoc amidst their citizens. As displayed through many cases of paranoia throughout the story, the DHS has no care for the mental trauma that their citizens have been put through. The abusive physical treatment given to those who oppose the DHS in a calm way, display that the DHS will do whatever they can to get information out of innocent citizens no matter what their physical conditions. The decisions carried out by the DHS government to help stop terror create more physical and mental trauma than stopping panic.

Tips to Make Nail Polish Dry Faster
Tips to Make Nail Polish Dry Faster No one wants to wait around for nail polish to dry. There are lots of rumors of ways to get polish to dry more quickly, but which actually work? These are the best quick-drying nail polish tips submitted by readers. Feeling scientific? Take a look at the chemistry behind quick-dry methods and learn which really work. Tips From Readers Readers have tried everything to get nails to dry fast. Here are some of their top recommendations: Use cooking spray as one of the other ladies said. It will work and leave your hands not too dry. (_ ms. know it all)Get cold water and dip your fingers inside for about 5 minutes and let them dry (air dry) for 5 minutes. (Cas)While you have a pot of water on the simply just put your hands over it. Not only will they dry but they will become matte nails as well. So, its like two things in one. (Coco Puff)Step 1: Always apply thin coats. Step 2: Bow on nails and run nails through ice cold water. Step 3: Apply additional coats if needed and repeat steps. Step 4: Wait for 20 - 30 minutes before doing anything. Step 5: Cant be patient? Buy yourself fast drying nail polish and/or buy Seche Vite. (Nail Lady)All you have to do is turn the cold to the sink on and put your hands in it, they will be done in 30 seconds. (i help)Put your hands in ice water. It makes your nails dry faster. (Guest)Use ice and water. It works really well they will be dry before you know it. (Kiley)This is insane! O il sprays and quick drying treatments do not actually make your polish dry faster. They do, however, reduce the likelihood that youre going to ding-up/smudge your polish while its drying, by forming a slick surface on top. Quick-dry topcoats are similar. They dont dry the polish underneath, but they do harden on top of it. If youre not careful, you can end up scraping your polish right off if the under-layers are still tacky when you reach into your bag for your phone. It still makes sense to use the above methods when youre trying to preserve a brand-new manicure. Its also important to understand how they work so you can achieve the best results! (Kate) I was in a hurry and was about ready to just remove my polish. But to my surprise the cooking spray totally worked for me. My nails were dry almost immediately. Makes me wonder about the chemicals in the cooking spray though! (Pat)So, what I do all the time is I add a little bit of nail polish remover to the nail polish and mix it really good. You can add it to your colors and/or your top clear coat. The alcohol in the remover makes the polish dry much faster than ice water or a hair dryer. It also turned that old gloopy polish back to normal! (Anonymous)Dip your fingers inside a cup with cold water and ice and your nails dry up. (Tania)Try a hair dryer on medium setting. It heats it or try sticking your hand in a freezer. It may seem crazy but it works. (savvy monkey)Do not use heat. All it does is melt the polish! Definitely use ice cold water! Dries em in a heart beat! (jazmyne)Pam (you know, the cooking spray?) works wonders! All you do is spray your nails and leave it for about 45 seconds. Youll have to wash your hands good though, since it makes them kinda greasy. (Mandi) Thin coats dry fast. Try doing multiple thin coats instead of one or two thick gloppy coats. Trust me, it works wonders. (Ilty_909)Ice cold water or Pam spray works really well. Also using a fan works. (Blah)I always have a candle lit in my room so I just hold them over the candle for a bit. Dont burn yourself though. (Sienna)Apply a coat of peanut butter and it will work as long as you dont touch anything! Later on youll have a nice snack for later. (Angelica)Nail polishes are solutions of a polymer and need only to have the solvent removed. Blowing on them can cause blushing. Stand with you hands above a central heating convector, not electric and you should get nice glossy nails. (Norman Nicolson)I just use a quick drying top coat. That way I can get my favorite polish without having to wait forever to get on with my life. It takes about a minute to get really hard nails, but I guess it depends what you use and how many layers of polish you added. (Pretty in Pink)Air dust them or put your hand in ice cold water for 3 minutes to dry them.Ã Spray cooking spray on them just in case! (Hannah Mahone)

Biotechnology Genetically Engineered Soybeans Essay
Biotechnology Genetically Engineered Soybeans - Essay Example This alleviates the need for same species to induce the genetic changes which can be transmitted in the subsequent progenies. The other specific feature of this technology is possibility of ignoring reproductive compatibility within the species with an accelerated generation of new progenies with the induced phenotypic and genotypic characters. It is to be considered that genetic engineering enables scientists to introduce the DNA fragments of a foreign organism into a plan through an entirely artificial way, which could be naturally imprecise and has all probability of being unpredictable, despite being unique (Stacey et al., 2004). The soybean is considered a major source of protein in human and animal nutrition, and it is also a source of vegetable oil. Soybean is also considered to be an economically important legume, However, naturally there are many variations in the phenotype of the seed, and this is prominent in seed weight. The bean in soybean is unique since it accumulates high levels of protein and oil, and a typical soybean seed has been reported to contain 40% of protein and 20% of oil by weight. Therefore the propensity of a larger size of seed and weight would ensure that protein and oil per seed can be considerably increased if the weight of the seed could be increased by any means (Clemente and Cahoon, 2009). To start with genetic modification of soybean was accomplished to achieve herbicide tolerant soybeans since these led to improved yields and reduced use of pesticides. Specifically, the advantages of herbicide tolerant soybeans were improved weed control, significant reduction of soil erosi on the crop fields, reduction in injury to the crop, and reduced cost on fuels. Therefore, the intention of this genetic modification was to lead to improved crops. Historically, crop varieties that resist diseases have been preferred by cultivators due mainly to their improved quality characteristics. One such example is genetically engineered soybeans that are tolerant to nonselective herbicides such as glyphosphate. Foliar administration of herbicide glyphosphate can kill soy plants, and as a result genetically engineered glyphosphate tolerant soybeans was a choice immediately since during growing season, glyphosphate may considerably reduce the yield (Qin and Lynne, 2007). This specific breed would allow the farmers to use glyphosphate to control weeds yet not lose on the crop yield. Specific Alteration The specific alteration involves introduction of a single gene in the commercial soybeans. This resulted in high level of glyphosphate tolerance to the soybean plants. A single gene encoding the glyphosphate tolerant 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase was introduced in the soybean genome. This was derived from Agrobacterium Sp. Strain CP4. 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase is known to be present in plants and bacteria as a component of shikimate pathway to synthesize aromatic amino acids. Glyphosphate tolerance locus could be identified in the glyphosphate tolerant locus in GTS 40-3-2, which had been studied to be a stable and simple dominant trait that can be transferred across generations through

You are an entrepreneur launching a new business. Explain what Research Paper
You are an entrepreneur launching a new business. Explain what marketing is and why is it important to your new business. Include the benefits of a marekting plan - Research Paper Example The initial step that marketing takes is to get prospective buyers and after this base management which is aimed at retaining the customers takes over. Base management requires the business to build and nurture relationships with the customer by improving service delivery and the quality of the products the customer needs (Tybout & Calder, 2010). Enhancing customer-business relationships enables the marketer to participate competitively in the market and this creates customer loyalty because the customer trusts that the business will be able to meet all their product needs in the best way. Customer satisfaction is paramount for any business to be successful and marketing will enable the business to know the needs of consumers since it will also involve marketing research to know the needs of the society. Marketing will enable the new business to make use of the four Pââ¬â¢s of marketing, which will reflect the desires of the customers and the target market (Tybout & Calder, 2010). The product aspect of marketing will enable the business to determine the product desired by the market and ensuring that this product is available to the customers. Pricing will ensure that the price if the product is set at a charge that is favorable and competitive enough, thus not run the new business out of the market. The promotion aspect of marketing will ascertain that there are advertisements, publicity and sales promotion, which are aimed at promoting the brand or the new business. The last aspect of marketing is placement, which will entail making strategies of how the product will reach the target market and the channel that will be used. The four Pââ¬â¢s are useful as they will ensure timely and effective delivery of the product to the target market and this creates customer satisfaction, which will increase sales as customers will be able to acquire goods

Social problem - elder care Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Social problem - elder care - Essay Example re services to their elderly parents, may hope not to find themselves facing such care needs, and may not face a legal requirement that they do so or face a requirement that is not enforced. The children may not, in fact, ever face such needs because some percentage of the elderly reaches the end of life without developing personal-care needs. The need to care for a child is in nearly all cases a temporary situation, followed by a transition a lengthy and gradual transition, to be sure - to the capacity for self-care associated with independent living as an adult. However, the transition into disability during old age may occur gradually or rapidly, and is likely to signal the onset of an irreversible state of dependency, one that will end only in death. Thus, for several reasons elder care merits, and receives, special attention. Yet, elder care and other major types of care work, such as caring for young children, share many common elements: much of the care is provided in private households and is done so "informally" by family members; the care entails heavy use of time inputs; care is provided more often by women than by men; the care effort imposes costs in many intangible domains upon those who do it; and, the caring produces benefits for society at large. Both the costs and the benefits are hard to quantify, in principle and in practice. (Arno, P., Levine, C., and Memmnott, M, 1999) Although different countries exhibit considerable variation in the types and generosity of publicly funded programs with which to meet the care needs of older people, the family remains "everywhere the most important providerâ⬠of such care. There is a voluminous research literature concerned with the nature, extent, components, and consequences of informal care provided to disabled elders. Much of that work is based on small, local-area samples, but in recent years a number of national-level data sources have become available with which to study elder care. One of the most

Supplementary Restraint and Air-bag system
Supplementary Restraint and Air-bag system Supplementary restraint and airbag system is a passive part of vehicle safety system. SRS is designed to protect and lower forces acting on the driver and passenger at the event of the accident. In a case of an accident at speed about 35km/h the SRS is activated and the following procedure is taking place: seat belt tensioners are activated -about 10-15 ms airbags are inflated -about 10-40 ms airbags are deflated -40-120 ms driver or passengers kinetic energy is taken in by airbags around 120 ms after accident the airbags are deflated SRS and air-bag system consist of: Driver and passenger airbags (including igniter and pyrotechnic inflator) a warning light (MIL) seat belt pretensioners impact sensors (crash sensors) electronic control unit. Illustration 1. SRS Driver and passenger airbag The airbag is made of one side coated nylon and has a shape of a big cushion. To allow rapid deflation air bag has side holes. Airbag is placed into steering wheel (driver) and front of passenger side but also is placed on the both sides inside of the car as a curtain (protecting against side impact). In the modern car the number of airbags and their sizes are constantly changing, but principals are the same. In a case of an accident ECU engage igniter which triggers the spark necessary to burn fuel tablets (pyrotechnic inflator). The burned fuel tablets produce a nitrogen gas which inflates the airbag. Everything happens in few ms and the amount of gas and pressure created during burning is strictly calculated for each airbag. Illustration 2. Airbag Warning Light (MIL) A warning light is used as a part of the self-diagnostic system. Every time when the ignition is switched on SRS checks all components of the system and if any fault appeared the MIL is activated. MIL light stays on as long as the problem of the system is not rectified. Illustration 3. MIL Warning Light Seat belt tensioners The function of the seat belts is to secure occupant of the vehicle from injuries at an accident or a sudden stop. Due to a seat belt slack, belt stretch, three point seat belt protection is limited up to 40 km/h, if speed is higher than this limit the occupants head or body can impact the steering wheel or the instrument panel. Seat belt pretensioners improve restraining ability of the seat belt and increase the protection of the occupant from injuries. In modern cars there are two types of tensioners, both of them can work simultaneously. The first type is a shoulder pretensioner. The pretensioner pulls the seat belt tighter and holds the occupant closely to the seats backrest. This action prevents the body from excessive forward movement. The pretensioner is activated at around 10-15 ms, and by conjunction with an airbag (10-50ms fully deployed) they absorb kinetic energy acting on the body. When the supplementary restraint system (SRS) detected an accident the pyrotechnic propellant charge placed in the tube tightener is activated and pressure is created. The rising pressure in tightener pushes the piston which is attached to the steel cable and pulls the seat belt tightly against the occupant. Illustration 4. Seat belt pretensioners In addition to the shoulder belt tensioner a buckle tighteners are developed. The buckle tensioner improves the restraining and protection on the occupant and prevents the body from submarining. Impact sensors There are two types of impact sensors: mechanical and electronic. The mechanical system is a ball in tube mechanism which basically consists of a ball, tube, magnet (holding the ball in position) and electrical circuit with a switch. If an accident occurs the ball is dislodged from the magnet and starts to roll forward inside the tube closing the circuit switch. Then the signal is sent to ECU to take further action. Illustration 5. Mechanical crash sensor Another type is an accelerometer. This kind of sensor detects any changes in a speed of a car and there are a few types of them in use. One of them is a piezoelectric crystal accelerometer which works on principals similar to the engine knock sensor, another one uses a spring. A drastic change in car speed (deceleration) will cause the seismic mass movement or a spring bend, either of which will then change the output from these sensors. Main advantage of this type of sensor is that sensors dont have to be designed for each car separately, as all changes can be made by the software.Illustraton 6. Electronic crash sensor Illustration 7. Piezoelectric crash sensor Electronic central unit (ECU) Electronic central unit collects and analysis the data from sensors and according to them it takes further action. The ECU has following functions: crash sensing by crash sensors (acceleration sensors) prompt activation of airbags and seat belt tensioners according to different types of the impact in the vehicle longitudinal direction eg. rear-end, frontal, side triggering of the seat belt tensioners depending on the buckle status, firing only when buckle is fastened voltage and energy accumulator if vehicle battery fails diagnosis of external and internal system components MIL activation storage of faulty codes and duration of it watchdog (WD) constant monitoring of the airbag units with regards to false activation in non-crash situation and corrected if needed. Since 2003 all ECU has three independent monitoring hardware watchdogs: WD1, WD2 and WD3. Each of them independently monitor the system and if all data collected by them is matching the system is triggering procedure according to situation. Diagnosis and repair defect: Make: Vauxhall Model: Astra Year: 2008 Reg. No: NL08BYY VIN: WOLOAHL0885070200 After switching on the ignition the Airbag MIL appeared on the dashboard. To find out the faulty code I plugged in the Snap-on diagnostic tool. Codes B0012 (driver airbag open circuit stage 1) and B0013 (driver airbag open circuit Stage 2) appeared. My diagnosis: there is no connection between the airbag unit and the system. To rectify this fault I do as follow: battery disconnected for at least 10 mins removed air bag from the steering wheel diagnosis confirmed: airbag was disconnected from the circuit Two plugs were connected to the airbag according to the number placed on the airbag air bag was replaced on the steering wheel battery was connected Finally, to confirm my diagnosis I reconnected the Snap-on diagnostic tool and erased faulty codes. MIL went off and the codes disappeared from the system.

Of Mice And Men? Is More Than Just The Tragedy Of Lennie; It Shows Th :: essays research papers
The world in the 1930ââ¬â¢s was a very uncaring place. Due to the depression, many families were split up, so loneliness was running ramped. Ranch hands were thought of as the loneliest people in the world ââ¬Å"Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the worldâ⬠(page 15). Loneliness wasnââ¬â¢t the only kind of sadness and suffering that was endured by the workers. Lost dreams, discrimination and being disabled were only some of the problems faced. But these were not only limited to workers, women also felt these kinds of sadness and suffering a lot. In the book, Crooks, Curleyââ¬â¢s wife and Candy are the main examples of these. Crooks is a black stable hand who has been called Crooks due the hunched back he has after a horse kicked him. In the 1930ââ¬â¢s, being black was an extreme disadvantaged. You would be discriminated for your colour and this would lead to loneliness. Crooks was always being blamed for everything that went wrong even though he was hardly involved. The boss picked on him because of his colour ââ¬Å"Anââ¬â¢ he give the stable buck hellâ⬠(page 21) ââ¬Å"Ya see the stable bucks a niggerâ⬠(page 21). Candy says this when George and Lennie arrive at the ranch and after Candy said that Crooks was a nigger, George accepted the bossââ¬â¢ treatment of Crooks. Another time Steinbeck talks about Crooks being discriminated was when he writes about the Christmas party where Smitty took after Crooks and the men did not stop the fight because Crooks was black, but did not allow Smitty to use his feet in the fight due to Crooksââ¬â¢ disability. Crooks has a room to himself because the guys wonââ¬â¢t let him into the bunkhouse because he smells. This makes Crooks a very lonely man. Candy says ââ¬Å"Got books in his roomâ⬠(page 21) as if that is some sort of replacement for the company of another person. ââ¬Å"A guy goes nuts if he ainââ¬â¢t got nobodyâ⬠(page 72) ââ¬Å"I tell ya a guy gets too lonely anââ¬â¢ he gets sickâ⬠(page 72). This Crooks way of trying to explain to Lennie that Lennie is a lucky man to a friend like George, and he is also saying something about his own death to loneliness. Curleyââ¬â¢s wife experiences nearly, if not more sadness and suffering than Crooks. She is discriminated like Crooks, but for a different reason.

What’s Up with Pasta
What's Up With Pasta Q1: We need to understand and research why the Spaniards are spending relatively less on Pasta than its European neighbors. Current market research done by AEFPA offers insufficient data, so we need to improve data quality. The main goal is the get a clear demographic segmented market overview. One of the problems is that we cannot clearly identify the potential and current pasta consumers clearly ââ¬â we simply do not know enough about of core target group. In addition we need insights on consumer behavior and habits as we do not know what drives the consumer decision when choosing pasta and when declining pasta.Another advantage of a broad market study would be that it would become clear if there are segments in the market currently not being explored. As a result we will be able to clearly identify the market entry barriers for pasta. According to our calculations (Appendix 1), there is an underutilized yearly market gap of EUR 87Mln. Given this significan t amount we find it justified to spend 0. 2% (Eur 175. 000) of the market gap initializing the market research plan, collect the data and conduct the analysis.Costs to marketing strategy, marketing planning and implementation are not included in this figure. We estimate the overall cost of the market research will be Eur 132. 800 Judging from informal discussions with contacts in Unilever and Kraft Foods, our estimate seems to be on the low side. Q2 ââ¬â Methodology: We are interested in conducting both quantitative and qualitative research. In our opinion we need both elements to fully understand the market. This will allow us to better segment the market. Starting point of the quantitative research is the detailed quantitative research already done by AEFPA.The Geographical sales overview, distribution channels and sales pr. pasta type, must be investigated further. We suggest conducting a demographic segmentation overlay to this data, as the segmentation will serve us by divi ding a large population/sample into specific customer groups. We are opting for the demographical segmentation as we expect to receive a large amount of data that otherwise would not be feasible to analyze. Therefore, we cluster the information to make patterns of sub-groups visible and will enable to identify consumer profile and behaviors. We refer to this as top-down market research. The consumer behavior can only be partly captured in the demographic segmentation, so to ensure we have a bulky sample of data, we introduce a bottom-up process by initiating ââ¬Å"Shopper Insightsâ⬠research. ââ¬Å"Shopper Insightsâ⬠will in addition to bring to additional data on behavior also provide invaluable insights to the customerââ¬â¢s perception of pasta. The aim with ââ¬Å"Shoppers Insightâ⬠is to passively monitor the customerââ¬â¢s behavior in the situation of purchase at point-of-buying to learn about the ââ¬Å"conversion rateâ⬠.Unilever defines ââ¬Å"Shopp ers Insightâ⬠as â⬠focus on the process that takes place between that first thought the consumer has about purchasing an item, all the way through the selection of that itemâ⬠. This is further underlined by practical examples from Kraft Foods Switzerland, who has provided access to their methodology to this group. We will be adopting the methods of ââ¬Å"5 Sââ¬â¢sâ⬠to conduct our ââ¬Å"Shopper insightsâ⬠research and conduct this across the difference distribution channels mentioned in the case.Detailed explanation in Appendix 2 By making use of both top-down and bottom-up quantitative research, we feel we have adequate data quality. However it is critical to maintain a satisfactory sample size. We assume our sample pool will be the entire Spanish population. There are many considerations when choosing a sampling size. We consider it a tradeoff between costs and sampling quality as there is a linear relationship between the sampling size and the cost. We estimate that the sampling size must be at least 384 people. See further details in appendix 3.To finish the research we introduce ââ¬Å"Consumer Insightâ⬠which is a qualitative overlay. Personal interviews with customers will be done immediately after the consumer has been observed in the ââ¬Å"Shoppers Insightâ⬠. The sample size when conducting qualitative research is less important as there is no need for statistical significance, so we will be highly selective when choosing participants. Actually we will aim to only interview the ââ¬Å"High-Consumerâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Non-consumerâ⬠segments found in the top-down demographic segmentation research. This will provide strong qualitative data for creating the marketing strategy and planning. These topics will not be discussed in this paper. Q3 ââ¬â Implementation: As we want to build in the existing data from AEPFA, significantly more data collecting must be done. We would conduct a survey on a large sample, using these four variables: Age, life-cycle stage (the life cycle stage of a consumer group defines what will be the need of that particular customer), Gender and Income. In addition questions in pasta purchasing history and frequency would be asked. The questions will be designed so the answers can be directly comparable across the entire sample. This can be achieved by having a 1-5 scale designed on which the answers must fit one of the numbers. Example: Question: ââ¬Å"How often do you eat pastaâ⬠, Possible answers: ââ¬Å"1: Never, 2: ones a day, 3: ones a week, 4: ones a month, 5: ones a yearâ⬠. By constructing all questions to fit such answer-schedule, we will be able to achieve statistical significance. The result will be a clear segmented group, where we can establish who are the current consumers (core buying segment) and non-consumers (core anti-buyers).We believe these segments should be targeted for further penetration. Next step we passively and discretely mo nitor the consumer at point-of-buying using the ââ¬Å"5 Sââ¬â¢sâ⬠approach (See appendix 2). We will be present in all the distribution channels mentioned. This can be done via video or via physical presents. It is paramount the customer is unaware she/he is being monitored as this potentially would influence the buying habits. The consumer segments found above ââ¬â the consumer and non-consumer ââ¬â will be specifically targeted in the monitoring. I. e. hen a consumer fits one of the segments, the monitoring will be initiated. We wish to focus on these segments due to costs, but could increase the sampling to all customers across all segments if budget would allow. As the quantitative research should not stand alone, we would initiate in-depth interviews with more open-ended questions to better grasp the motivation behind the choice made by the customer. Such questions could be ââ¬Å"Why did you buy pastaâ⬠, ââ¬Å"What type of pasta do you normally buyâ⬠, ââ¬Å"why did you buy pasta instead of rice or potatoes. . For the non-consumers questions could be ââ¬Å"Why do you choose rice/potatoes instead of pastaâ⬠, â⬠Which pasta products are you missing in the shopâ⬠etc. We believe the quantitative and qualitative output of this extensive research plan, by identifying the two interesting segments and dwell into their motivations behind their choice, would form an excellent base for developing an effective market strategy and for creating an overall marketing strategy for Pasta in Spain. ? APPENDIX 1For the calculations of the market gap ââ¬â difference in current and potential market ââ¬â we have assumed the following: â⬠¢Current year is 1990. â⬠¢Potential year is 1992. Population has increased by 0. 6% from 1990 to 1992. â⬠¢Euro/Pesetas exchange rate is 166. 386. (Official final fixing when Spain adopted the Euro) â⬠¢Consumer behavior in terms of demand of the different pasta types is unchange d from 1990 ââ¬â 1992 â⬠¢Pasta price was inflated with 4% from 1990 ââ¬â 1992. â⬠¢Consumption of pasta rose 1 kg pr. Capita from 1990 ââ¬â 1992 Pasta Market in 1990: Pasta Market in 1992: ? APPENDIX 2:The 5 Sââ¬â¢s method is designed so marketers can observe a customer from entering point-of-buying (POB) to final transaction. The method works on two levels: 1. Consumer level; The consumer are monitored so we follow the target discreetly around the POB. We observe how the consumer Sees, Scans, Spot, Show interest and (potentially) Select the product we represent. This gives us valuable information as we can identifies were in the process we lose the customer (also call Fall-out). The conversation rate is computed as number of consumers selecting our product out of shoppers entering the POB.The net sales for a given company is highly sensitive to changes in conversation rate ââ¬â Only a small increase in conversion will generate a (relative) large increase i n sales. 2. Store layout and the category placement in POB. We can observe the customersââ¬â¢ ability to find the product in POB; is the product visible to the consumer, where on the shelve is it placed, is it placed with complementary goods? or supplementary goods? After the research is concluded feedback will be delivered to POB to improve visibility if required. ? APPENDIX 3: We recognize the sample size of 1067 is a (very) rough estimate. We opted for an internet resource from Creative Research Systems as we decided to focus our resources on the research planning and method. The sample size is computed using: Confidence level: 95% Confidence Interval (margin of error) 5% Population 40ââ¬â¢000ââ¬â¢000 We believe these input factors are comparable with real-life statistical simulations. ? APPENDIX 4: As we require a specialized set of data and therefore need a specialized report, we assume such report must be order and bought directly at a Market Research company or instit ute under normal circumstances. As it is specialized we assume the price will be high, so budget with a one-time payment of EUR 75. 000. We have only very little foundation for making this estimate. It was the conclusion of a conversation between marketing executives on Linkedin. The bottom-up research will need to conduct 384 observations in order to fulfill to the minimum sample size requirement found in appendix 3. Based on information from marketing sources at Kraft Foods, we consider it realistic one market researcher can conduct 25 observations in one day. This results in 15. 3 days of work at an assumed daily rate of EUR 1000

An Overview of Basque Country
An Overview of Basque Country The Basque people have inhabited the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains around the Bay of Biscay in northern Spain and southern France for thousands of years. They are the oldest surviving ethnic group in Europe. Even so, scholars have still not determined the exact origins of the Basques. The Basques may be the direct descendants of the first hunter-gatherers that lived in Europe about 35,000 years ago. The Basques have prospered, though their distinctive language and culture were sometimes suppressed, giving rise to a modern violent separatist movement. History of the Basques Much of Basque history is still largely unverified. Due to similarities in place names and personal names, the Basques may be related to a people called the Vascones that lived in Northern Spain. The Basques get their name from this tribe. The Basque people had probably already lived in the Pyrenees for thousands of years when the Romans invaded the Iberian peninsula during the first century BCE. The Romans had little interest in conquering Basque territory due to the mountainous, somewhat non-fertile landscape. Partly due to the terrain of the Pyrenees, the Basques were never defeated by the invading Moors, Visigoths, Normans, or Franks. When Castilian (Spanish) forces finally conquered the Basque territory in the 1500s, the Basques were first given a great amount of autonomy. Spain and France began to pressure the Basques to assimilate, and the Basques lost some of their rights during the Carlist Wars of the 19th century. Basque nationalism became particularly intense during this period. Spanish Civil War Basque culture greatly suffered during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s. Francisco Franco and his fascist party wanted to rid Spain of all heterogeneity, and the Basque people were specifically targeted. Franco banned the speaking of Basque, and the Basques lost all political autonomy and economic rights. Many Basques were imprisoned or killed. Franco ordered the Basque town, Guernica, to be bombed by the Germans in 1937. Several hundred civilians died. Picasso painted his famous ââ¬Å"Guernicaâ⬠to demonstrate the horror of war. When Franco died in 1975, the Basques received much of their autonomy again, but this did not satisfy all Basques. ETA Terrorism In 1959, some of the fiercest nationalists founded ETA, or Euskadi Ta Askatasuna, Basque Homeland and Liberty. This separatist, socialist organization has conducted terrorist activities to try to break away from Spain and France and become an independent nation-state. Over 800 people, including police officers, government leaders, and innocent civilians have been killed by assassinations and bombings. Thousands more have been injured, kidnapped, or robbed. But Spain and France have not tolerated this violence, and many Basque terrorists have been imprisoned. ETA leaders have claimed numerous times that they want to declare a cease-fire and solve the sovereignty issue peacefully, but they have broken the cease-fire repeatedly. The majority of Basque people do not condone the violent actions of ETA, and not all Basques want complete sovereignty. Geography of the Basque Country The Pyrenees Mountains are the major geographic feature of the Basque Country. The Basque Autonomous Community in Spain is divided into three provinces- Araba, Bizkaia, and Gipuzkoa. The capital and home of the Basque Parliament is Vitoria-Gasteiz. Other large cities include Bilbao and San Sebastian. In France, many Basques live near Biarritz. The Basque Country is heavily industrialized and energy production is particularly important. Politically, the Basques in Spain have a great deal of autonomy. While they are not independent, the Basques control their own police force, industry, agriculture, taxation, and media. Basque: The Euskara Language The Basque language is not Indo-European: it is a language isolate. Linguists have tried to connect Basque with languages spoken in North Africa and the Caucasus Mountains, but no direct links have been proven. The language Basque is written with the Latin alphabet and the Basques call their language Euskara. It is spoken by about 650,000 people in Spain and about 130,000 people in France. Most Basque speakers are bilingual in either Spanish or French. Basque experienced a resurgence after the death of Franco, and to get a government job in that region, one needs to speak and write Basque; the language is taught in various educational facilities. Basque Culture and Genetics The Basque people are known for their diverse culture and occupations. The Basques built many ships and were excellent seafarers. After explorer Ferdinand Magellan was killed in 1521, a Basque man, Juan Sebastian Elcano, completed the first circumnavigation of the world. St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order of Catholic priests, was Basque. Miguel Indurain has won the Tour de France multiple times. Basques play many sports like soccer, rugby, and jai alai. Most Basques today are Roman Catholic. The Basques cook famous seafood dishes and celebrate many festivals. The Basques may have unique genetics. They have the highest concentrations of people with Type O blood and Rhesus Negative blood, which can cause problems with pregnancy. Basque Diaspora There are approximately 18 million people of Basque descent around the world. Many people in New Brunswick and Newfoundland, Canada, are descended from Basque fishermen and whalers. Many prominent Basque clergymen and government officials were sent to the New World. Today, about 8 million people in Argentina, Chile, and Mexico trace their roots to the Basques, who emigrated to work as sheepherders, farmers, and miners. There are about 60,000 people of Basque ancestry in the United States. Many reside in Boise, Idaho, and in other places in the American West. The University of Nevada at Reno maintains a Basque Studies Department. Basque Mysteries Abound The mysterious Basque people have survived for thousands of years in the isolated Pyrenees Mountains, preserving their ethnic and linguistic integrity. Perhaps one day scholars will determine their origins, but this geographic puzzle remains unsolved. Sources and Further Reading Douglas, William, and Zulaika, Joseba. Three Types of Galaxies essays
Three Types of Galaxies essays Elliptical galaxies are collections of stars that remain pretty close together because of the gravitational attraction between them. There is not a certain known rotation axis, so the stars in the galaxy show a wide range of orbital paths. The motions of stars are not entirely random; there is a degree of organization in the direction of these motions, and this determines the overall shape of the galaxy. Elliptical galaxies have a plain appearance, and some elliptical galaxies are nearly circular in shape, and some elliptical galaxies are extremely stretched out or flattened. The ones that are spherical are classed as E0 galaxies, and those that are flattest are E7, the types in between have the numbers E1 to E6. Elliptical galaxies show a larger range in brightness, some can be up to 10 times brighter than the brightest spiral galaxies, and the dullest ellipticals can be 1000 times less luminous than the dullest spiral. An elliptical galaxy is given the label En, where the galaxy sh ape determines the number n. Most galaxies are elliptical. This type of galaxy dependends on the orientation of the galaxy from our viewpoint; in other words, it describes how the galaxy appears to us, it does not tell us a lot about the true physical properties. Unless a galaxy is perfectly spherical, it will have a different appearance according to the direction from which we observe it. Another type of galaxies is called spiral galaxies. It has wide-ranging spiral arms like a hurricane, and a densely populated bar of old stars near the center. All that is clear in visible light. Each spiral galaxy is classified with a label, which gives some indication of its appearance. All spiral galaxy labels begin with the prefix "S", and usually is followed by a lower case letter, which describes the "style" or overall appearance of the particular object. This letter may be either 0, a, b or c, and is determined by ...

Convert most of the Universitys Undergraduate Teaching to Online Essay
Convert most of the Universitys Undergraduate Teaching to Online Courses - Essay Example The other reasons are such that, an online program is cheaper, and it also allows most people to achieve their education with their preferred universities without having to attend the universities physically. There has been a crisis in the job market where some industries lack enough trained personnel to fill the required deficit. Some of these industries or sectors include the medical industry as well as other technical fields that require thoroughly trained specialists. One of the reasons why these sectors do not have adequately trained personnel could be because such disciplines require more facilities per students to train. According to the law of demand and supply, when there are few trained specialists, there is a high demand for them in the market. Hence, there is a need to add more trained personnel to meet this growing demand. To be able to increase training of this required personnel, the online study methods are the most appropriate. With online study program, many students can enroll and be taught at the same time without occupying any physical space. The second reason for converting undergraduate programs to online courses is because of it affordability. Given the fact that th ere will be no physical space occupied, meaning, less and fewer resources will be used in teaching. This clearly shows that many people will be able to afford the online courses offered through the online study method as the courses will be cheaper than the usual prices. This will translate into higher many people being trained. When many people are trained, the rate of innovation will definitely increase since and the country will have its economic development levels increase. When there are many trained personnel, there will also be adequate human resources for the country to stir up its economy. Usually, the higher the number of untrained citizens in a country, the poorer the country becomes since the unemployment rate increases.

Past Sport Experience Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Past Sport Experience - Assignment Example For my case, successful management of sports organizations must incorporate possession of skills, experience, knowing the sport well and having the aggression and power (Masterman, 2014). There are various reasons as to why I support the assertion. First, you cannot manage a sport you lack information on or donââ¬â¢t know very. It hence entails knowing the sport such that during unfair play and favoritism from the referee, the manager can always defend the team. If one lacks knowledge about the game, they can always be made injustice at during decisions. In English Premier League, for instance, the manager of a Chelsea Team Jose Mourinho, once played football as his profession, worked as an interpreter of English for a coach and later started his career as a coach. This means that he gathered prior knowledge about football first before venturing into coaching (Headline, 2015). Second, being a successful manager requires the aggression, skill, and power. In America, for instance, the best coaches and team managers of all time such as Vince Lombardi had the aggression, skill, and power of managing teams such as Green Bay Packers in NFL. Lombardi worked on a principle that ââ¬Å"Winning is Everythingâ⬠. This assisted him to gain the vigor, energy, and determination required of him to successfully steer the team to success (Masterman, 2014). Third, one must always have experience in the sports before they manage them well. Lack of experience makes one lack the feeling the players always have on the field. When one is tired or injured, an experienced manager will be able to identify it so fast and make the necessary changes without any form of hesitation. Additionally, a manager with experience will always know the perfect substitute in case a player is injured or is out. This is because they have studied and understood the playing capabilities of their players.Ã
